The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth hosts its annual Cool Kids Read service project in partnership with Shawnee State University’s Project Bear program and the Portsmouth Public Library. Cool Kids Read, first launched In the fall of 2021, was developed and implemented to promote literacy to second graders in six different school districts in Scioto County and encourage them to get excited about reading.
The participants are members of the Kiwanis Key Clubs at Clay, Portsmouth, East, Wheelersburg, West, and Notre Dame high schools as well as Circle K Club members from Shawnee State University. The Key Clubs and Circle K club are service clubs sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth.
On April 26, 2023, the Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth received an award fromServeOhio through the Ohio Commission on Service and Volunteerism for our Cool Kids Read program. The award came with a $1,000 grant to support the continuation of the program.
The ServeOhio Awards, made possible through support from the American Electric Power Foundation, recognize outstanding people, groups, and initiatives in each region of Ohio who make great contributions to their communities through service and volunteerism.

The Cool Kids Read campaign continued its second year for 2022-23 with Circle K and our high school Key Clubs again participating.
On Saturday, September 17, 2022, Shawnee State Circle K members distributed free books to all children who attended our annual Kids Day event in Tracy Park. Pictured from left are Olivia Holsinger (Circle K Secretary), Shawn E. Bear, and Makayla Aiken (Circle K President).
On October 11, 2022, Hayley Venturino, Director of Shawnee State’s Project Bear program, taught our Circle K and Key Club members a way to read in an engaging and funny way at our annual boot camp held at Gatti’s Pizza in Portsmouth.
In addition, the Portsmouth Public Library offered “The Bad Seed Take N’ Make Craft” at all locations during the month of November.
During the fall of 2022, our Key Club members visited the second-grade classrooms in their districts to read The Bad Seed. In the spring of 2023, they will return along with Shawn E. Bear to pass out free books to the same children. In some schools, the Key Clubs have been invited back to read to the second-graders every week.
During Black History Month, our own Kiwanis board member and MLB Legend Al Oliver spoke about growing up in the city of Portsmouth as a man of color. Al, who has been a member of our club since 1990, is pictured with Kiwanis President Jamie Colley. ... See MoreSee Less
Recent guest speakers at Kiwanis were Julie Hutchinson and Jodi Conkel who provided us with information about the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office's Special Victim’s Unit. Julie (left) is Chief Assistant and Special Victims Prosecutor for the Prosecutor's Office, and Jodi (right) is Special Victims Detective Sergeant for the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office. They are pictured with President-Elect Dan DeLotell.
The unit investigates mostly child victim crimes, but it also addresses crimes against elderly and other vulnerable populations such as handicapped individuals.
